○ What is the difference between deodorant and antiperspirant?
It is important to highlight that deodorant and antiperspirant are not the same thing. Whilst people often use the terms interchangeably, they work in very different ways. Deodorant typically works by combating the bacteria that breaks down sweat and causes the odour, but it doesn’t actually stop you from sweating. In contrast, antiperspirant contains Aluminium Chlorohydrate, which blocks sweat glands and plugs your pores, so the bacteria on the top of your skin doesn’t get a chance to react with the apocrine sweat and create an odour. By stopping you from sweating, antiperspirants prohibit your body from doing what it is made to do, which is to expel toxins and cool you down.
○ How is natural deodorant different?
Natural deodorants are made with ingredients that are kind to skin and won’t block your pores, allowing your body to sweat, cleanse and detox naturally. Salt of the Earth natural deodorants are also CFC free, Leaping Bunny approved (11/02/20), Vegan and free from controversial, synthetic chemicals such as Aluminium Chlorohydrate. The Salt of the Earth range only contains natural ingredients including organically grown skin-soothing aloe vera, natural botanical extracts, essential oils, and minerals such as potassium, magnesium and sodium bicarbonate. These natural active ingredients reduce sweating, absorb moisture, soothe sensitive skin and of course leave you smelling fresh.
○ Is the Salt of the Earth range aluminium-free?
Salt of the Earth natural deodorants are all free from Aluminium Chlorohydrate and Aluminium Chloride which are commonly used in antiperspirants to block pores and prevent sweating. Some people may be confused about the fact that our deodorants do contain Potassium Alum, which is from the same mineral family; however Potassium Alum is not the same and does not have the same controversial reputation. Unlike Aluminium Chlorohydrate, Potassium Alum is comprised of large molecules that sit on top of the surface of the skin, creating a barrier. Aluminium Chlorohydrate, is comprised of much smaller molecules than Potassium Alum allowing it to be absorbed by the skin and plugging the sweat glands, preventing the release of sweat and unwanted chemicals in the body. Potassium Alum is a natural mineral salt used as an alternative to Aluminium Chlorohydrate and Aluminium Chloride and is the sole ingredient of our Crystal deodorants. Its antimicrobial properties have been celebrated for hundreds of years, used as a topical astringent, an antiseptic for wounds, acne and tonsillitis and a toner to tighten the pores.
